The history of blood donation in Parma is inevitably linked to the figure of Walter Torsiglieri, a pioneer of blood transfusion from the dawn of discovery of the Rh factor to modern times. He undoubtedly deserves recognition for merit and privilege of having been the most beloved doctor by donors, for the relationship he always knew how to establish with each of them, whom he was the first to love and respect.

Short Biography

Walter Torsiglieri (Terenzo, 18 July 1922 – Parma, 13 June 2006) was an Italian surgeon and haematologist, founder of the first Parma’s Hospital Transfusion Centre in 1951 and replaced by the second in 1978, currently named to him.
The youngest of six brothers, Walter Torsiglieri was born in Boschi di Bardone, a hamlet in the municipality of Terenzo (PR) in a family of humble origins: his father Angelo ran a restaurant with his mother Adelina, managing with many sacrifices to educate all his children by moving to the city of Parma during the 1920s.
He attended first and second level school at the “La Salle” institute and obtained his classical high school diploma at the “Romagnosi” Lyceum, with which he was later admitted to the University of Parma.
On July 17, 1947 he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Parma with top marks.
After he continued his studies as a resident doctor in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic until 11 July 1951, specialising again with top marks.
On September 18, 1951 he became Director of the first Hospital Transfusion Center in Parma, which he inaugurated.
On May 15, 1967, the new Hospital Transfusion Center of Parma was inaugurated in the Cattani pavilion, where he continued to practice his beloved profession throughout his life.

I tell you about an episode who Prof. Novarini reminded me in the occasion of World’s Day of Blood Donor:

A Sunday afternoon about 40 years ago, in Parma a man was admitted to the Maggiore Hospital in a very serious condition. To save his life it was necessary to completely replace his blood and obviously intervene promptly, Prof. Novarini contacted my father and together they went to the Stadium Tardini (Fortunately that day the Parma football team playing there) at the end of the match they make a plea to all those present to come to the Transfusion Center to donate blood and fans, managers, players of Parma football team and the opposing team players rushed to hospital!
This man, still alive, was saved thanks to this noble gesture of solidarity.
